Awesome cycle trip up the Kattegatt cycle track. Once again Colin organised good accommodation in perfect locations and organised great little side events and great places for night meals and stops along the way. The E - Bikes were great as were the regular cycles in our group.

Explore narrow cobbled streets with buildings dating back to the 1500s.

DAY 4 (Tues) Halmstad – Falkenberg: 60 kms

Heading west to Tylosand; location of Sweden’s most famous beach. Heading north the route at times hugs the coast, crosses open countryside, forest reserves and lush farmland. An excellent lunch stop at a classy coastal café. You pass the small community of Ugglarp, famous for its vegetable gardens and onto Falkenberg. It has small town historic charm and is a recognised food destination with pride in sourcing local ingredients. (A cycle rest day is perfectly viable if you choose: 17 mins train Halmstad to Falkenberg).

Day 5 (Wed) Falkenberg – Varberg: 40 kms

Consider a 'trio of porridges' to start your day from Sweden's best? porridge maker. Day 5 is a shorter day cycling across open countryside passing native bird reserves and picturesque sea-side harbours. Approaching Varberg along the rocky coastal promenade is a delight. The massive Varberg Fortress looms large on the skyline. It was built in 1287-1300 by Count Jacob Nielsen as protection against Eric VI of Denmark. Hand back your bikes and celebrate the completion of the cycle journey with dinner at an excellent restaurant.

FAQs

  • Yes. The Kattegatleden is Sweden’s first national cycle path and was designed with accessibility in mind. Most of the route follows flat, traffic-free coastal paths or quiet roads, making it ideal for a range of abilities. Less experienced riders can enjoy the tour, especially with the option of e-bikes. Daily distances are flexible and support options are available if someone prefers a shorter ride.

  • The west coast of Sweden is famous for its fresh seafood — expect opportunities to try herring, prawns, and smoked salmon straight from fishing villages. Swedish culinary traditions like “fika” (coffee and cinnamon buns) are a daily highlight, and you’ll also find farm-to-table restaurants and seaside cafés along the way. The tour is as much about cultural immersion as it is about cycling.

  • Yes. The Kattegatleden hugs the coastline and passes directly through charming towns and villages such as Ängelholm, Varberg, Falkenberg, and Kungsbacka. Attractions like Sofiero Castle and Gardens, Varberg Fortress and sandy beaches are located just off the trail, making them easy to access during your ride. You won’t need to make long detours to enjoy the cultural and natural highlights.

  • The Kattegat coast can be breezy, especially in spring and autumn, but summer months (June–August) usually offer calm and pleasant cycling conditions. Prevailing winds generally blow from the south, so riding north from Helsingborg to Gothenburg often means a helpful tailwind. Occasional headwinds are possible, but the route’s flat profile and availability of e-bikes help ensure the ride remains enjoyable.

  • Yes. The Kattegatleden runs directly along Sweden’s west coast, passing sandy beaches, sheltered coves, and scenic harbours. Summer water temperatures typically range between 16–20 °C, making it refreshing for a swim during your ride or at days end. The route also has plenty of rest areas, beach cafés and picnic spots, so you can take relaxing breaks with coastal views.
